Percentage Flip

Technique: The percentage flip trick

The key insight

X% of Y is always equal to Y% of X. So if one direction is hard, flip it!

Examples

• 4% of 75 is hard — but 75% of 4 = 3. Answer: 3
• 8% of 50 is hard — but 50% of 8 = 4. Answer: 4
• 24% of 50 → 50% of 24 = 12. Answer: 12
• 15% of 40 → 40% of 15 = 6. Answer: 6

Common easy percentages

• 50% = halve it
• 25% = quarter it
• 10% = move decimal one place left
• 5% = half of 10%
• 75% = three quarters
